Handshaking, Transmission Modes

Posted on Tuesday, 17 January 2012 by Mrs Nunn | 0 comments

Handshaking is when signals are exchanged between devices to establish whether they are ready to send or recieve data. For example Bluetooth or PC to printer.

Transmission modes

Simplex
Data is transmitted in one direction only

Half duplex
Data can be transmitted in both directions but only one direction at a time

Duplex
Data can be transmitted in both directions simultaneously

An example of simplex transmission is TELETEXT where data is transmitted to the television receiver but there is no way to transfer data in the other direction.

An example of half duplex is a CB radio system where each handset can be set to send mode or receive mode.

An example of Duplex transmission is a telephone call where both users can speak and be heard at the same time.
